How to Make Your Gilbert Kitchen Greener

Gilbert Bamboo KitchenWhether you’re buying, building, or remodeling, the wave of the future in kitchens is green—not the color green, although it’s very nice, green as in ecologically responsible. Green means that you not only help save resources, you save your own money in reduced energy costs.

If you’re thinking green, here are some things you can look for when house shopping, or planning a remodel. And remember, if you’re getting ready to sell you home, people are looking for features that are ecologically sound and that will save them money.

• When it comes to wood cabinets and flooring, consider bamboo. Bamboo can grow up to four feet a  day, so it is considered a renewable resource, and that’s a good thing. You might also choose cork flooring, or hardwood floors that are Forest Stewardship Council certified.
• Look at the two things that use the most water in your kitchen—the dishwasher and the faucet. Low flow faucets can save up to 30% on water, and they’re so well made these days, you won’t notice that you’re using less. Low water consumption dishwashers save water and save you money on your water bill.
• Glues for cabinets, and paints and stains should be low VOC (volatile organic compound). Stains and paints should be water based.
• You can get countertops and backsplashes that are made from recycled glass or other recycled materials. These are attractive and durable.
• Ovens are moving into the future, too. Look for a combination convection/microwave oven. Food cooks 30% to 50% faster in these, saving energy and money.
• For under and in cabinet lighting, LED lights make sense, saving energy and money, and emitting no heat.

The kitchen is one of the most used rooms in a home. Gilbert buyers want kitchens that are comfortable, attractive, and energy and money saving. If you’re remodeling your kitchen, check out your green options. And if you’re looking for a new home or planning to build, bring your green desires to the table with you. A green kitchen is better for the earth and better for your wallet, too
